Internationalization has been viewed as a process of increasing involvement of enterprises in international markets, although there is no agreed definition of internationalization or international entrepreneurship. There are several internationalization theories which try to explain why there are international activities.

Trade theories

Absolute cost advantage (Adam Smith, 1776)

Main article: Absolute advantage

Adam Smith claimed that a country should specialise in, and export, commodities in which it had an absolute advantage. An absolute advantage existed when the country could produce a commodity with less costs per unit produced than could its trading partner. By the same reasoning, it should import commodities in which it had an absolute disadvantage.

While there are possible gains from trade with absolute advantage, comparative advantage extends the range of possible mutually beneficial exchanges. In other words it is not necessary to have an absolute advantage to gain from trade, only a comparative advantage.

Comparative cost advantage (David Ricardo, 1817)

Main articles: Comparative advantage and Ricardian economics

David Ricardo argued that a country need not have an absolute advantage in the production of any commidity in order for international trade between it and another country to be mutually beneficial. By absolute advantage was meant greater efficiency in production, or the use of less labor in production. Two countries could both benefit from trade if each had a relative advantage in production. By relative advantage was meant simply that the ratio of the labor embodied in two commodities differed between two countries, such that each country would have at least one commoditiy where the relative amount of labor embodied would be less than that of the other country.

Global Factors that explains internationalization of operations?
Q. Global Factors that explains internationalization of operations?
Asked by Kwame O - Fri Nov 24 05:28:24 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. bureaucracy, local unions and lack of ethics laws for foreign labor, EPA regulations, taxes, city ordinances etc, you name it. in California Boeing aerospace spent nearly 10billion dollars projected to shut down operations locally and open up in Siberia. this is not to inconvenience anyone and indeed is a minor step back, but a necessary one for the survival of the company was my understanding of the move. in the US we had something that went through during the Clinton administration known as NAFTA. I don't give you a global picture, but hopefully here is one piece of the puzzle for you.

Q. I am a teacher of English as a foreign language in Japan. I want to bring more internationalization into my classes. What is something interesting about your country, state, province, howmetown that my students might be interested in?

A. Personally I like to find common ground among all of us. If your students are young they might be interested in learning about corporations that produce gym shoes and blue jeans and ipods. Check on the Yahoo Q&A in the family and friends categories, for instance, and see how people all over the world have the same worries and concerns. I live in Chicago and probably the largest Japanese influence would be in the food industry. People here love sushi (I think that's Japanese). And we all drink lots of tea. Chicago would be a great place for your students to travel to because there are always so many things going on in this city; and the transportation is pretty good too. I lived in San Francisco, California for a time and S.F. has a… [cont.]

A. The internet is a great resource for any kind of activity you may partake in. It is very beneficial in researching, learning and teaching others. It also is great for cheating on homework assignments when they haven't been completed. Many young adults visit the internet and provide "stars" for people that will answer or write their homework for them. This is a very tactful strategy and is used world wide. Although the internet is a great place to cheat your way through high school or college education programs, it causes people to be lazy and even more ignorant than they were before. Often times it leads to people getting degrees in things that they know nothing about. Hence plastic surgeons, doctors and pilots that don't know what they're… [cont.]
