Australia ( / ə ˈ s t r eɪ l j ə / ə-STRAYL-yə or / ɒ ˈ s t r eɪ l j ə / o-STRAYL-yə, or / ɔː ˈ s t r eɪ l i ə / aw-STRAY-lee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent (the world's smallest), the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the northeast and New Zealand to the southeast. For at least 40,000 years before European settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous Australians, who belonged to one or more of the roughly 250 language groups. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north and discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the following years; the continent was explored and an additional five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established during the 19th century. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and is a Commonwealth realm. The population is 22 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. The nation's capital city is Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory. A prosperous developed country, Australia is the world's thirteenth largest economy. Australia ranks highly in many international comparisons of national performance such as human development, quality of life, health care, life expectancy, public education, economic freedom and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Australia is a member of the United Nations, G20, Commonwealth of Nations, ANZUS, OECD, APEC, Pacific Islands Forum and the World Trade Organization. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What will it take for India to overpower Australia in cricket? Q. A population of over 1 billion and a lot of its citizens are hard working and talented people. But somehow beating Australia still remains a near impossible task in cricket. Australia is very good in sports, not just cricket but in olympics too -- they win lots of golds, silvers and bronze too. For India olympic medal is next to impossible. Australia also played in soccer world cup 2006 -- India can't play in soccer world cup for a very long time. So despite such large population, skill and talent why India cannot compete with Australia in sports? Asked by AJ - Fri Dec 28 02:40:46 2007 - - 11 Answers - 1 Comments A. A corruption free system. That's the only thing required i think. We have the money,we have the talent, we have all resources. Just need to work on some basic things. Answered by Mayur (INDIA) - Fri Dec 28 17:19:15 2007 What absolute advantage does Australia have over other countries and through which products? Q. I have an international business portfolio that requires me to research Australia over the entire semester and hand in all my answers at the end of the semester in January. It mainly comes down to the fact that we have so many natural resources and that gives us quite a lot of power to control various parts of the world. If we stop digging up uranium then parts of the world would go without electricity. We have a very unique position being the only "western" country in the Asia region, which means we have really strong partnerships and link in Asia (trade agreements, business links, political links etc etc) but also really strong links with Europe and the US. Our position will become increasingly important to the US especially as we enter a new era with China and North Korea, as we are the predominant "western" contact within these regions. We also have a large business sector (most European/American… [cont.] Answered by doodler - Mon Oct 19 00:44:27 2009 Who else thinks the continent of Australia should be changed?
Q. It's rather misleading to consider Australia a continent of its own. If that were to be the case, what continent would New Zealand, Indonesia, and the numerous Polynesian Islands be considered a part of? Besides Indonesia, the other islands are clearly NOT part of Asia. So therefore, I propose that Australia and all these other countries be grouped into one continent: Oceania (the geographical term for these islands). Anyone care to comment?
