A. Tartar needs to be removed by scraping. Brushing and greenies will only prevent additional build up. You dog needs to have her teeth cleaned by a vet

A. The only way to get tartar off of your teeth is to get a professional dental cleaning. Depending on how long it has been you might need a deeper cleaning, possibly requiring more than one visit. You cannot take tartar off simply by brushing and flossing, otherwise there would be no need for dental professionals to clean your teeth.

How do I Remove Tartar Off of My Dog's Teeth?
Q. My dogs love canned foods. We find it difficult to brush their teeth each time we bathe them. Now I see tartar starting to build up so I need to know how we can remove the tartar.

A. Have you tried Greenies? My Jazzy absolutely loves her Greenies. She goes crazy over them. And so do I because I know her teeth are being taken care of and it s no longer a fight to take care of them. Did you know that oral disease is the #1 diagnosed health problem in pets? And just like in humans, oral disease can often lead to problems with other vital organs as well. Greenies are clinically proven to reduce plaque and tartar build up. They are one of the only dental treats recognized by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). Also they are highly soluble for safe digestion. They come in 5 different sizes and it is very important to get the correct size based on your dog s weight otherwise the product will not be doing what it is… [cont.]

A. The only safe way is to go have your teeth cleaned by a professional. Tartar is hardened plaque, and it takes special tools to remove it. Also, it's not good to brush your teeth that many times in one day. You can cause abrasions to your teeth, which can make them super sensitive to pressure. You should be brushing 2-3 times a day, flossing once a day, and having your teeth cleaned every six months.

A. First of all YUCK! I'm not sure how anyone can even have that much tartar buildup... but what I do to keep my teeth clean and healthy is floss 2-3 times a day (floss is inexpensive) and I brush my teeth 2-3 times a day with an electric toothbrush... I have very healthy teeth and gums... and I see the dentist every 6 months for a check-up... sorry but seeing a dentist is a must if you want to keep your mouth healthy...

Remove tartar without removing permanent wire?
Q. I am noticing some tartar buildup behind my permanent lower wire that is causing one of my lower teeth to move forward ever so slightly. Would the dentist need to remove the wire in order to clean the tartar? Do I need to go back to the orthodontist to replace the permanent retainer?
Asked by leek - Thu Jul 1 17:12:44 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I too have a permanent wire on the inside of my lower teeth. The dental hygienist should be able to remove the tartar. My hygienist uses a device called a "Cavitron" that works very well for tartar in places like these. If the permanent wire needs to be removed and replaced, your dentist will tell you what to do. I know it's difficult to floss around a permanent wire; I use proxabrushes to scrub around mine. I couldn't find a good image; they look sort of like a pipe-cleaner and they've available in any store that sells dental items like toothpaste and toothbrushes.

A. Hi, I'm gonna have a jaw surgery soon! Woohoo!! And from what I have read, when people are wired shut, they use baby toothbrushes to clean their mouths ('coz they brushes are much small). And some use water toothbrushes. Hope it helps. Btw, why don't you ask your surgeon? (I mean, tell your mom/dad to ask the surgeon/ortho for you) Get well soon! Pretty smile is waiting! :)

A. You enamel will not be damaged. These people are very well trained to remove the tartar. You are feeling sensitivity in your tooth and gums. Tartar removal is exposing new areas to air, like when you cut you nails back and your fingertips feel funny to touch.

How to I remove tartar?
Q. I have a permanent retainer that spans my bottom row of teeth and goes across the back. Every time I go to the dentist, they tell me I need to do a better job of cleaning up under my retainer, but I can't reach it well with my toothbrush or floss. I floss, use mouthwash, and brush my teeth 2 times a day and plaque and tartar still build up. Any suggestions?

A. Your problem is a common one but using an electric toothbrush may decrease the amount of buildup. They do a much better job at cleaning than manual brushing.

A. I am a tooth-brusher as well. Some other options: Dentahex - rawhide coated with enzymes to help break down tartar - from vet. I love them, my dogs love them, but they come with the same risks as any rawhide in terms of obstructions with dogs that eat rawhides in one big piece. C.E.T Aquadent - (from the same makers our your liver-flavored toothpaste) add to water to prevent plaque. Haven't tried it, but I've heard good things. Hill's T/D or Purina DH - dental diet. I use them as treats - gigantic kibbles to help clean your pet's teeth while they eat. Could not be easier. (They also can take white-out off of just about any surface) Oravet - starts during your dog's dental, then you keep up once a week. It is a gel that you apply to the… [cont.]

A. Tartar or calculus is strongly attached to the teeth. It must be chipped and scaled off with special instruments. You most likely have a lot more below your gums that you can't see. Flossing, brushing, and rinsing will not do the job. Sorry

Can I Effectively Remove My Dogs Tartar?
Q. I have a 3 year old, female Chihuahua with tartar. Can I remove it at home with the proper dog toothpaste and toothbrush or is this something that only a vet can do?
Asked by Miss Kimber - Sun Mar 28 15:29:51 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If the plaque has already hardened into calculus, you will need a professional veterinary dental cleaning. Brushing will remove plaque, but not calculus (tartar). In order to remove the tartar under the gumline, the dog needs to be anesthetized (wouldn't hold still otherwise). Once his mouth is recovered from the professional cleaning, you begin your home brushing program. You want to start when his mouth is pain free so he will tolerate brushing. Daily brushing should extend the time between veterinary cleanings.

A. You really should see a dentist every six months for your cleanings. Plaque is the white build up that forms on your teeth that you can just brush off. But tatar build up is hard and is something the hygienist will need to remove. Should can help will brushing 3 times a day and flossing. Sometimes plaque can get slightly underneath your gums and the hygienist is the only one that can remove that. See the dentist now because if you wait it will only be harder on you when you have your cleaning. Good luck!

How well do hygienists remove plaque and tartar?
Q. My teeth have got a lot more yellow lately, especially in between. I am feeling very self conscious to be honest. I am 17 and only a year ago they were really nice looking. My brushing habits haven't changed and nor has my diet and I do not smoke. If I was to go to a hygienist would it help? My stains are pretty bad my bottom teeth especially (dark brown). Do hygienists restore whiteness well? Thanks for any help.
Asked by matt - Mon May 11 14:32:50 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You should see a hygienist every six months - your dentist may suggest three months if they think this is appropriate. A hygienist will be ale to remove plaque and tartar. To whiten your teeth you will need to have them bleached - this is very effective but you should speak to your dentist to ensure that your teeth are healthy etc (bleaching doesn't work on all teeth). He can then make you a personal mould for your own teeth (known as trays) and advise you on how to use them. Don't use over the counter bleaching kits.

A. MICKEY, hard tartar, also called calculus, should be removed using an ultrasonic instrument by your dentist. certain sonic toothbrushes are useful for removing soft sticky plaque (BACTERIA) from the tooth surface, but are ineffective for hard tartar. the dentist may also use special manual instruments for this work.

A. Yes, sometimes a topical anesthetic in a gel form is used... it it placed on a q-tip and applied to the area where the tooth and the gums meet.. it's the same thing as the gel that's used prior to getting an injection... As far as being allergic to it... I suppose it's possible but I haven't met anyone yet that has had an allergic reaction to it~

A. A simple cleaning, which removes tartar off of your teeth should cost you about $65 minimum. However, you cannot go to a dentist to just get your teeth cleaned. If you are looking for something cheaper, try a dental school-they are always looking for patients and it is usually very cheap or free. If you need scaling and root planing, to remove tartar off of the roots of your teeth, this is much more costly- about $175(minimum) per quadrant of your mouth.

Don't worry, I won't try doing anything dangerous with my teeth(I just had a dental cleaning anyway last week, my teeth are so smooth and clean I have no tartar to remove anyway), but they are my teeth, not my dentist's teeth. A. It takes a sense of touch and dexterity to find and remove tartar. I have seen some dentist butcher up a mouth and not even remove the tartar. So if you think you can train yourself to remove the tartar on all of you teeth, even the back ones, you are fooling yourself. Don't be penny wise and dollar foolish. The tartar you think you may have removed may be lying under the gums causing periodontal disease and bone loss.
