Can I omit cream of tartar from a sponge cake recipe without damaging the end result?
Q. since sponge cakes are made of so much egg whites, (and im not sure if this is correct, but i always thought of cream of tartar as a stabilizer), would the cake deflate if i dont use cream of tartar? the recipe calls for baking powder and cream of tartar, not baking soda, so i cant substitute using baking powder.

A. creme of tartar In food, potassium bitartrate is used for: Stabilizing egg whites, increasing their heat tolerance and volume; Frequent combination with baking soda (which needs an acid ingredient to activate it) in formulations of baking powder. Why not try this recipe which is a simple chemical free recipe. with a mechanical whisk beat six eggs and 125gr of sugar until a stiff foam(best done in a kenwood mixer type machine) then slow the machine right down and gently fold in ,using the machine,125 gr of sifted cake flour. For chocolate sponge sift in with the flour 20gr cocoa though this would benefit from 5gr of baking powder.Pour into a greased ,floured tin and bake for approx 20 min at 180c

What is tartar? and What can i do to prevent it from building up on my teeth?
Q. see i went to the dentist yesterdayand the chick said i had massive tartar build up on the back of my front bottom teeth. I did not know why or how it got there? can you help? i have braces though and it's hard to get behind my teeth!

A. If you don't brush and floss well in certain area, plaque build up and after 24 hours it becomes hard which is tartar. Tartar forms more in the lower back of front teeth and upper back left and right near the cheek. People always missed brushing those area. Try to use smaller edge of your toothbrush to brush the inside of your lower teeth, or use the brush that have pointy ended.

What is the difference between Tartar Sauce and Cream of Tartar?
Q. I'm trying to make royal icing to put on my gingerbread cookies, and i found a recipe online which requires Cream of Tartar. Since i don't exactly know what that is, i was just wondering if it was like Tartar Sauce? Also, if anyone knows a different recipe to create royal frosting and could tell me that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Asked by Angelina - Thu Dec 24 16:35:25 2009 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. They are completely different items - they can never be substituted for each other. Cream of tartar is a powdery additive that, in icing, helps prevent sugar crystals from forming as it dries out. It has other culinary uses - but that is why it is used in the icing. Tartar sauce is a sauce made of mayo, pickle relish and whatever else you want in there - it is used for fish and other foods as a condiment. There is no cream of tartar in tartar sauce! So - no substituting the Cream of Tartar with Tartar sauce! :-) I hope your cookies come out well.

What is the best way to remove tartar from my dog's teeth?
Q. Don't know how this happened, but my dog got some tartar on her teeth, even though her teeth are brushed regularly. Unfortunately, I do not have the money to have a vet remove the tartar for they gave me quite an expensive price (around $470). Luckily it is not that big and hopefully I will be able to remove it. What are the best ways to remove the tartar? And please don't say see a professional, if I were able too, I would.

A. I would leave it to the professionals, they have the training and the tools to effectively remove the tartar build up. How bad is the tartar build up, if it's only a little bit I wouldn't worry about it, some tartar build up is normal. There are treats, toys, rinses that will help with your dog's dental health. Also feeding your dog dry dog food will help prevent build up, the dry dog food actually helps break up some of the tartar. You might be able to find some dental tool and instructions online about how to go about manually scraping off some of the tartar, but I would consult you Vet before attempting this yourself. (imo) 1. it might be really uncomfortable for the dog and he might not sit still for the procedure. 2. if the dog… [cont.]

Are there any substitutions for cream of tartar?
Q. I am baking biscuits, and the recipe is calling for baking powder and cream of tartar.
Asked by Donna A - Wed Sep 5 09:07:10 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. a good substitution. If cream of tartar is used along with baking soda in a cake or cookie recipe, omit both and use baking powder instead. If it calls for baking soda and cream of tarter, I would just use baking powder. Normally, when cream of tartar is used in a cookie, it is used together with baking soda. The two of them combined work like double-acting baking powder. When substituting for cream of tartar, you must also substitute for the baking soda. If your recipe calls for baking soda and cream of tarter, I would just use baking powder. One teaspoon baking powder is equivalent to 1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 5/8 teaspoon cream of tartar. If there is additional baking soda that does not fit into the equation, simply add it to the… [cont.]

How long can you keep tartar in teeth?
Q. I have small amounts of tartar for a month, and my next dental appointment isnt for another 3 weeks. I noticed some spots in my teeth and some brown stains on another and afraid that I might develop severe periodontitis. So, if you have tartar in your teeth, and it remains for about 2 months, is it possible that nothing serious would happen? I am slightly paranoid and trying to find a way to stay calm haha.

A. You do need a dental appointment to have some work done. It is not an emergency, and 3 weeks will make no difference in what happens.

A. If you go to a local drug store you should be able to find a metal dental pick. It should only cost you a max of $10. Than I would use it to scrape off all of the built up tartar. But remember there is no substitution for seeing your dentist. Check out:

How do I remove the hard tartar buildup on my gums other than a dentist visit?
Q. I have to wait a few months before I can go to the dentist and I have hard tartar buildup on my gums, is there an at home remedy I can do before I go to the dentist?
Asked by andrea - Fri May 22 22:02:30 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Tartar or calculus is strongly attached to the teeth. It must be chipped and scaled off with special instruments. You most likely have a lot more below your gums that you can't see. Flossing, brushing, and rinsing will not do the job. Sorry

What's a good substitute for cream of tartar?
Q. I don't have any and my mom's already been shopping TWICE this week and I don't want to make her go again. But I also want to make Turkish Delight (after finding an incredible pretty and simple recipe). I have all the ingrediants except cream of tartar. Thank you for helping! I just got the cream of tartar, but this recipe has NO EGGS. And it already has lemon juice. So any other suggestions would be great. (I think the baking soda/powder/whatever would add a funny taste, because I've been able to taste it before)
Asked by Alice - Tue Aug 7 19:45:16 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Substitute 1/4 teaspoon of lemon juice or white vinegar for each 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar called for to stabilize egg whites. Keep in mind that vinegar may alter the taste of the final product. When cream of tartar is used in a recipe with baking soda, it works like a double-acting baking powder. If cream of tartar is not available, substitute baking powder for both the baking soda and cream of tartar called for in the recipe. Use 1 teaspoon baking powder for every 1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar.
