How does tartar/calculus form on teeth? What causes tartar and can tartar cause a cavity?
Q. I just get confused about it with cavities and sometimes it's hard to tell whether you got a cavity or whether you got tartar/calculus which is brown.

A. tartar or calculus is a form of harden dental plaque. dental plaque is soft and easily removed from tooth surface via brushing and flossing, but if it not removed for a some time like a week, it will become a calculus which caused by the continual accumulation of minerals from saliva on the plaque. dental plaque and calculus contain bacteria which can cause gum disease like gingivitis and periodontitis, and also dental cavities.

A. there isn't a good substitute for cream of tartar in cookies , just use baking powder and add baking soda for the levening and a little lemon juice can help the snickerdoodles have that fruity taste that would come from cream of tartar.

How does cream of tartar accomplish its purpose in baking powder?
Q. Baking powder consists of a mixture of baking soda and a substance such as cream of tartar. In the production of carbon dioxide gas, baking powder acts differently from baking soda. When water is added to baking soda, it just dissolves. But when water is added to baking powder, carbon dioxide gas is produced. What's the purpose of cream of tartar & how does it accomplish it's purpose?

A. Cream of tartar is an acidic compound. It is the mono-potassium salt of tartaric acid, which has two acidic protons. The second acidic proton can still react with the baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to produce water and CO2. KH[tartrate] + NaHCO3 --> NaK[tartrate] + H2O + CO2

A. If you don't brush and floss well in certain area, plaque build up and after 24 hours it becomes hard which is tartar. Tartar forms more in the lower back of front teeth and upper back left and right near the cheek. People always missed brushing those area. Try to use smaller edge of your toothbrush to brush the inside of your lower teeth, or use the brush that have pointy ended.

Q. I don't remember where I heard this, but I think I read it on this site. Does anyone know of its true? If so, does that mean there is alcohol content in cream of tartar?

A. Cream of tartar is a byproduct of winemaking. It is a type of acid which precipitates on the side of the wine bottle. This does not mean that it is alcoholic. The molecular structure is different than that of an alcohol. it has an oxygen and hydroxide ion attached to the structure, as opposed to an oxygen and a hydrogen.

What do I substitute Cream of Tartar with?
Q. I have a recipe for homemade playdough. The problem is that is needs cream of tartar--since it isn't available here. I've read about white vinegar and/or lemon juice. Would it work as well in this recipe? Thanks! I live in Germany where this is not readily available. I do believe that I can get it, but it is usually imported, which is expensive, or at "foreign" (asian, middle-eastern) markets, and expensive.

A. I researched it and this is what I found... 2 cups flour 2 cups warm water 1 cup salt 2 tablespoons vegetable oul 1 tablespoon cream of tarter... Then in the recipe I found it says that cream of tartar is optional and it is only used for elasticity. So i say leave out the cream of tartar.

I need help with some baking math for substituting cream of tartar?
Q. with substituting cream of tartar with baking powder. We're making snickerdoodles. The recipe calls for two teaspoons of cream of tartar and one teaspoon of baking soda. What should we use to substitute for cream of tartar and how much?
Asked by Jewelry Queen - Sat Dec 15 23:36:32 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Cream of tartar is an acid that when mixed with baking soda will make baking powder. Together those two ingredients react with liquid and cause rising. So, if you are substituting for baking powder, you need to add baking soda AND cream of tartar. To make baking powder, add two teaspoons of cream of tartar for each teaspoon of baking soda. To do your substitution, omit the baking soda and cream of tartar and add 3 teaspoons full of baking powder.

A. Tartar or calculus is strongly attached to the teeth. It must be chipped and scaled off with special instruments. You most likely have a lot more below your gums that you can't see. Flossing, brushing, and rinsing will not do the job. Sorry

A. You can omit it, if you have none. Cream of Tartar is excellent for stabilizing whipped egg whites. As long as you make sure your bowl, spatula, and everything is free of oil or grease or plastic (use wooden spoon), you won't lose too much volume. Oil is an enemy to whipped eg whites.

Does anyone know the difference between sashimi and tuna tartar?
Q. I just asked this question a little while ago, but didn't get many answers so I thought I'd try again. I know what Sashimi is, and I know basically what tuna tartar is, but what's the difference? I heard someone talking about tuna tartar on Best Year Ever... That's not sashimi, ole man. What you're talking about is called nigiri style sushi, and can use more than tuna, such as unagi (eel), tako (octopus), or any other kind of fish.

A. I am a former chef and the first gentleman has it right, it made alot like steak tartar, as tuna wheter sushi grade or otherwise is mild in flavour and almost beef like in texture. Were I used brandy in my meat one, I like mustard and sake in tuna, as for sashimi, it is just served raw generally with ohter types of fish on a sashimi platter, with wasabi like with sushi, pickled ginger and soay or ponzu sauce for dipping the fish in, tuna tartar is serve like steak T, with crisp bread or toast points and garnishes like capers, red onions and parsley.
